Power Guide

A power guide for South African workshops preparing for CNC and laser installs, including supply, breakers, cabling, and floor planning.

Electrical prep before machine arrival

The Power Guide helps South African workshops prepare the electrical side of a CNC or laser installation before the machine lands. Check supply type, breaker sizing, cabling runs, isolators, and machine position so commissioning is not delayed by site power issues.

Use the Power Guide to confirm whether the workshop has single phase or three phase supply, what voltage is available at the DB, and how far the cable run is from board to machine position. In South Africa, load-shedding history, generator changeover, and older industrial wiring can affect CNC spindles, laser power units, chillers, and extractor fans before commissioning even starts.

Photos of the main DB, sub-boards, isolator points, and the intended machine area help expose issues that a typed note misses. Include clear shots of breaker labels, spare ways, cable entry routes, and the slab where the base will sit so power and placement can be checked together.

Checks covered in the guide

The guide focuses on incoming supply, breaker sizing, earthing, isolator position, cable route, and working space around the machine. It also helps you note nearby compressors, extraction ducting, chillers, and roller doors that may interfere with access or with the final machine layout.

When you send the completed Power Guide, add the DB breaker ratings, supply details, planned timing, and any known electrical faults through the contact form. If a CNC router, fibre laser, or CO2 laser is being installed, mention the machine type and whether backup power, a phase failure relay, or a dedicated earth point is being considered.

  • DB photos with readable breaker labels
  • Cable route measured to machine position
  • Supply type noted before install planning

South African workshop power concerns

Many sites in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, and surrounding industrial areas have older boards, mixed additions over time, or limited spare capacity. The Power Guide is there to catch undersized breakers, long cable runs, missing isolators, and awkward machine placement before the crate lands and the electrician is called back.

Generator supply and inverter backup should be declared if they feed the machine, chiller, extractor, or compressor. Voltage drop on long runs, poor earthing, and damp coastal conditions can all influence how the electrical side is specified for a laser or CNC installation.

What to send with it

Send the power guide with DB photos, supply details, timing, and any electrical issues already identified. Keep the subject line direct and honest.

Attach the Power Guide with site photos, the machine model if known, and a short note on any restrictions such as shared boards, after-hours access, or trenching limits. If there have been nuisance trips, burnt contactors, or repeated phase imbalance issues on other equipment, record that in the same message so the power review starts with the right context.
