Overnight Run
A realistic route for urgent machine movement and site planning in South Africa, written for teams who already work to tight production windows.

How Overnight Run fits a production week
Overnight Run deals with jobs where machine movement and site prep must fit around live production. We use this route when access, offloading and changeover need careful planning so a CNC or laser cell can be positioned with minimal disruption to the floor.
Overnight Run is used when a CNC or laser machine has to move into position between shifts or over a short shutdown window. The brief must show forklift access, rigging limits, slab condition, door heights, and the point where power, air and extraction will be tied in. Gauteng dust, Durban humidity, Cape Town wind on open yards, and load-shedding plans all change how the move is scheduled.
Include clear photos from the truck entrance to the machine bay, not only the final install position. A marked layout with columns, drains, cable trays and existing machines helps us check turning space and offloading order. Keep the notes with your PO file so the night move and the morning restart refer to the same record.
Night move planning pack
The output for this route is a movement sequence, a site readiness list, and a record of what must be disconnected, protected, lifted and rechecked before production resumes. It also sets out who handles unloading gear, electrical isolation, air lines, guarding and first power-on. For urgent machine placement, a short accurate plan is more useful than a long chain of assumptions.
Before widening the job, tie Overnight Run to the relevant machine record, transport file and inspection notes. A pre-shipment check in China should confirm the machine, tooling, chiller, extractor and listed options match the order.
- Built around access and shutdown hours
- Bay photos checked before lift planning
- One record for site and logistics
SA constraints that change the move
This route usually needs attention to OR Tambo collections, port release timing, warehouse cut-offs and the condition of older industrial premises. Some sites in Johannesburg and the East Rand have tight yards, uneven aprons or shared loading areas that affect crane and truck placement. If the machine is entering a running plant, state which line will stop, what stock is queued, and who signs off once utilities are live again.
Coastal installations need extra care around rust risk, electrical cabinets and packaged components waiting in storage before placement. Inland workshops often require more cleaning around guideways, optics, vents and sensors after a move. Where power interruptions are common, first-part testing should be timed with available backup, stable voltage and the correct extraction setup.

Commissioning notes after the shift
Prepare the Overnight Run brief with site photos, delivery timing, and known failures already slowing the line. Keep the subject line accurate.
Once the machine is in place, capture the commissioning record while connection points, alarms and alignment checks are still fresh. Note the serial details, installed options, service items used on site, and any setting changed during restart. That file sits with the project summary and handover documents when the buyer needs a full movement and installation trail.
