Soft Start

A short note on soft start planning after installation, before full-rate production begins.
One recurring oversight can hold up a full install. On South African factory floors it often arrives before lunch: startup settings not confirmed, material prep not ready, or the machine unloaded before the power plan was checked. Soft Start is our note for teams that want calmer commissioning days.
Soft Start starts after the riggers leave and before production targets are pushed onto a new cell. On a laser or CNC install in South Africa, this stage is where power settings, gas supply, extraction, consumables and first-job material are checked against what the machine actually sees on site.
First-run checks on site
- Incoming power and earthing verified
- Nozzle, lens or tooling condition recorded
- First material batch identified and stacked correctly
- Operator names logged for handover training
After installation, the useful next reference is the machine page alongside the application page for the work you intend to cut or process. One shows the equipment and options, while the other helps the team judge material choice, starter settings and output limits during the first controlled runs. Together they reduce guesswork before production speed is increased.
How Soft Start protects a new laser cell on site
A new machine should not go straight from installation into full production speed. Soft Start covers the first controlled production runs, where settings, material behaviour and operator habits are checked before output increases.
Early production behaves differently in Wadeville, Durban and Cape Town because site conditions are not the same. Highveld dust can get into rails and extraction points, while coastal moisture can affect stored sheet, electrical cabinets and exposed tooling. Power interruptions, generator changeovers and workshop access also shape how the first controlled runs should be scheduled.
Photograph the machine once services are connected and again after the first usable part is produced. Include the control screen, consumable setup, sheet or stock used, and any marked-off settings that were changed during commissioning. Those records help when the next shift asks why one parameter was reduced or why a slower feed gave a cleaner edge.
Soft Start records kept nearby
The useful output from Soft Start is not a sales summary. It is a site-specific set of startup settings, a short run history, and a checked list of what was used for the first accepted parts. That gives production, maintenance and management one reference point before output is increased.
Before ramping up volume, connect Soft Start to the matching machine route, the install notes and a ship notes entry for the same project. Confirm that listed accessories, spare consumables and operator basics arrived with the machine, then note what was actually fitted during commissioning. Sourcing requests should cover the machine type, the controller you prefer and the port or town it must reach.
- Built around the first scheduled jobs
- Initial settings captured before shift change
- Operator and site contact details noted
South African startup conditions
A soft start plan must fit the receiving site, not just the machine manual. Older industrial buildings may have uneven slabs, limited extraction runs, tight roller-door access or shared DB boards that affect startup sequencing. Where a workshop is adding a second or third machine, the handover should also note how the new cell will sit alongside existing loading space, forklifts and power demand.
In coastal areas, check cabinets, optics storage and bare stock for moisture-related issues before long production runs begin. Inland workshops should pay close attention to dust buildup around guides, sensors, fans and covers during the first days of use. Where load-shedding or unstable supply is part of the picture, record exactly when the first approved part was cut or machined and under what power conditions.

First-run settings and handover
A short note on soft start planning after installation, before full-rate production begins.
Write the Soft Start note while the installer, operator and first-run material are still on hand. Include the accepted part, the settings used, any rejected trial pieces, and the checks still outstanding before full output starts. That gives the buyer and site team a usable record instead of relying on memory after handover.
